Should You Bring a Companion for Surgery in Korea?
For a facelift or body contouring, yes, for at least the first three to five days. What a companion actually does in Seoul, how long they need to stay, what they need for entry, and how they can use the waiting hours.
Short answer: For a facelift, tummy tuck or body contouring, yes, for at least the first three to five days. For eyelids or a simple breast augmentation, it helps but isn't essential. The companion's job is ordinary: getting you back from the clinic, fetching food and prescriptions, and noticing if something changes overnight. US and Canadian companions enter on the same visa-free terms as you.
Who you bring matters less than whether they know what the week looks like before they book a ticket.
What does a companion actually do?
Mostly errands and watching. Our recovery timeline guide is blunt about it: they aren't a nurse and shouldn't be doing wound care. They'll be walking you to the bathroom at 3 a.m. and sitting in waiting rooms for most of a week.
A useful list for them:
- Surgery day. Wait, then take you back to the hotel by taxi. At Severance Hospital, a guardian (보호자) registers a phone number in advance and gets text updates as the patient goes from preparation to surgery to recovery. Ask your clinic if it does something similar.
- Days 1 to 3. Pharmacy runs, porridge, ice packs, the medication schedule.
- Nights. Look at you. One side swelling much more than the other, or pain getting worse instead of better, is the call-the-clinic-now sign after a facelift.
- Follow-ups. Take notes. A patient on painkillers misses a lot at a day 5 check.
How long does the companion need to stay?
The first three to five days at minimum, and the whole stay for a facelift if they can. That's 12 to 14 days for a facelift, 14 to 18 for a tummy tuck.
If they can only come for part of it, put them at the front. Days 1 to 3 are the low point. By the second week you're slow, but able to get yourself to coffee.
Can the companion get treatment too?
Often, and it's a good use of the waiting hours. A comprehensive health checkup at Samsung Medical Center takes three to eight hours; see our one-afternoon checkup post. Skin treatments fit around your follow-ups.
Two rules keep it from going wrong:
- Not on the same days as your worst days. Book their checkup for day 6 or later, not surgery day.
- Sedation goes both ways. Samsung Medical Center and Severance require someone to take a patient home after sedated endoscopy. That's you, once you're up and walking.
If you're both having surgery, stagger the dates by two or three days so one of you can always stand up.
What does a companion need to enter Korea?
The same as you. US citizens get 90 days visa-free, Canadians six months. The K-ETA travel permit is waived through December 31, 2026; from January 1, 2027 it's needed unless the waiver is extended, except for travelers 65 and over or 17 and under. Our K-ETA post has details.
A companion on a passport that needs a visa is different. Medical Korea, the government's foreign-patient site, says a patient's spouse or children coming to help with care can apply alongside the patient's medical visa. See do you need a medical visa for Korea.
Where should you both stay?
Somewhere within a short taxi ride of the clinic, with two beds. The person who's two days post-op needs to sleep when the other is awake, and a bed you can get out of matters more than the view.
