What Does Facelift Recovery Look Like Day by Day in Seoul?

Day 1, days 2–3, day 5, suture removal around day 7–8, and days 10–14 after a facelift in Seoul, using Korean clinic aftercare sheets and what Korean patients wrote in their own recovery diaries.

Short answer: Swelling and bruising peak on days 2 to 4, the drain usually comes out between day 2 and day 5, and stitches come out around day 7 to 10. Plan on 12 to 14 days in Seoul. Korean clinics put ordinary daily life at two to three weeks, and the tight, numb feeling at one to three months.

Korean clinics hand out a printed aftercare sheet. Korean patients write recovery diaries (회복 일기) on community sites. This post puts the two side by side, because the sheet leaves things out.

What happens on day 1 after a facelift?

You go back to the hotel in a compression wrap, often with a drain bag (피주머니) behind each ear. One Gangnam clinic's sheet says to stay lying down for the first 48 hours and warns that some blood on the dressing is normal.

Food is rice porridge (죽) for two to three days.

Why are days 2 and 3 the worst?

Because swelling (붓기) peaks at 48 to 72 hours. Bruising (멍) spreads and fluid drifts down toward the jaw and neck.

Cold packs help until about day 3. Some clinics start a chin strap (압박밴드) on day 2, worn two to three hours at a time with fifteen-minute breaks.

This is when the pull sets in. A 40-year-old woman on the Korean community Sungyesa compared it to rubber bands hooked all over her face, stretched almost to snapping. It didn't hurt, she wrote. It just never stopped, and her face felt so hot she took night walks to cool it.

What changes around day 5?

The drain is usually out, and the front of the face starts to look like yours again. That same patient had her drain removed on day 5: front view mostly settled, yellow bruising under the eyes, sides still swollen.

Showering and hair washing often start around day 3. Some clinics wait until the drain is out.

When do facelift stitches come out?

Around day 7 to 10, often in two rounds. Korean aftercare sheets range from "day 7 to 10" to "within one to two weeks."

A woman who had a lower-face mini lift wrote up her day 8 visit. Half the stitches came out and the rest were booked for a week later. She didn't feel the staples at all, and the stitches only stung. The disinfecting beforehand was the part that hurt. The clinic taped the incisions for two to three days.

That afternoon she wore makeup for the first time and went out without a mask, hair pulled forward.

What do days 10 to 14 look like?

Functional, not finished. Bruising slides down with gravity toward the jaw and neck. The 40-year-old patient's neck bruising took about two weeks to clear, and on day 18 she still had a blue-yellow patch in front of her ears.

Most surgeons clear a facelift patient to fly at 12 to 14 days. Our recovery timeline guide explains how that's decided.

What do Korean patients complain about most?

Rarely pain. It's the daily stuff:

  • Sleeping on your back. The back of the head aches, and one patient said lying down made her dizzy and nauseous. Another blamed her firm memory-foam pillow and suggested a softer one.
  • A mouth that won't open. One patient ate with a child's spoon for several days.
  • Hard, lumpy skin in front of the ears. Clinics call it 흉살 (scar tissue) and say it softens over about three months.
  • Numbness, for one to three months. Prickly twinges later on were explained to one patient as nerves coming back.
  • Not washing your face properly. One patient's two-week photos still show surgical marker lines.

If one side swells much more than the other, or pain gets worse instead of better, call the clinic that day. It can be a hematoma. Our post on what happens when a facelift goes wrong covers the warning signs.

How do we help during the recovery weeks?

We handle the parts that are hard to do alone in a foreign city.

  • Airport pickup, and a hotel close to the clinic so day 2 isn't a long taxi ride.
  • An interpreter in the consultation room and at follow-ups, including suture removal.
  • Booking across hospitals, only with clinics where a board-certified plastic surgeon (성형외과 전문의) operates, at no charge to you.
