How Do You Choose a Checkup Hospital in Seoul?

University hospital or standalone checkup center, the two quality grades Koreans look up, why the endoscopy room matters most, and what to ask a Seoul hospital's international desk before you book.

4 min read

Short answer: Pick on three things: who does your endoscopy, what happens the same week if something turns up, and whether an international desk handles your booking and English report. For most visitors that points to a university hospital center such as Samsung, Asan, Severance, Seoul St. Mary's or SNUH Gangnam, which refer findings straight into their own departments. Standalone centers are faster to book and usually cheaper.

The price question is covered in our checkup cost guide. This one is about where to go. The scanners are mostly the same brands everywhere. What differs is the people and the plan B.

What kinds of checkup centers are there in Seoul?

Two kinds. University and large general hospitals run checkup centers (건강검진센터 or 건강증진센터) inside or next to the main hospital. Standalone screening organizations run nothing but checkups, often across several branches.

Korean patients mostly go wherever their employer has a contract. Visitors have to choose.

Is a university hospital better than a standalone center?

For a first checkup from abroad, usually yes, because of what happens after the scan. Big hospitals have the specialists and longer waits. Standalone centers have quick slots and lower prices. Asan Medical Center, whose screening center sees over 40,000 people a year, says serious findings go through a set referral path to its specialized centers, such as its cancer and heart institutes. SNUH's Gangnam Center, on floors 38 to 40 of the Gangnam Finance Center on Teheran-ro, refers foreign patients to the main Seoul National University Hospital.

For a simple baseline, plenty of people pick a well-run standalone center. With a family history or a symptom you've been ignoring, the referral path is what you're paying for.

How do Koreans check a checkup center's quality?

They look up two grades, and both are public.

The first is the national checkup institution evaluation (건강검진기관 평가), run every three years for centers doing national screening. Results are posted on the National Health Insurance Service site, nhis.or.kr, as 우수 (excellent, 90 points or more), 보통 (average, 60 to 89) or 미흡 (poor, under 60). Two "poor" grades in a row can mean a three-month suspension.

The second is the endoscopy unit certification (우수내시경실 인증) from the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy's research foundation. It looks at staff, equipment, procedure, performance indicators, disinfection and sedation, and lasts three years.

Neither grade covers the foreign-patient desk. You still have to ask.

Does the location matter?

More than people expect. The big centers are spread out:

  • Samsung Medical Center: Irwon-dong, far southeast
  • Asan Medical Center: Songpa, east
  • Severance: Sinchon, northwest, with a second hospital in Gangnam
  • Seoul St. Mary's: Banpo, Seocho
  • SNUH Gangnam Center: Teheran-ro, central Gangnam

You arrive fasted and early, and may leave sedated. A hotel twenty minutes away beats a famous name an hour away. If you're adding skin or dental work in Gangnam, see where the clinic districts are.

What should you ask before you book?

Send these to the international desk in writing:

  1. Is the endoscopy done by a gastroenterologist, and is the unit certified?
  2. If a polyp is too big to remove on the day, where does it get removed, and when?
  3. How long do full results take, and can a doctor go over them with an interpreter before I fly?
  4. Is the report issued in English, and are images included?
  5. Which tests suit my age and history, and which can I skip?

The last one matters. A good desk trims a package. Our one-afternoon checkup timeline shows what a lean package looks like in practice.

How do we help you pick?

  • Free, itemized quotes from 2 or 3 checkup centers, with what each one does if something is found.
  • An interpreter in the room for the results talk, and airport pickup on arrival.
  • Follow-up appointments booked across hospitals if a finding needs one. No charge to you.
