Can You Tell a Plastic Surgery Specialist From the Clinic Sign in Korea?

In Korea, only a clinic opened by a board-certified plastic surgeon may put 성형외과 in its name. How to read a clinic sign, and what it doesn't tell you.

Short answer: Yes, partly. Under Korea's Medical Service Act, a clinic may be named "○○성형외과" only if the doctor who opened it is a board-certified plastic surgeon. A clinic run by a general physician has to be named "○○의원" and can only list plastic surgery as a field it treats, in smaller lettering.

This is the fastest check there is. It takes thirty seconds on the clinic's Korean website or its street sign, and it filters out the biggest group of non-specialists before you read a single review.

What does the Korean name of a clinic tell you?

It tells you whether the founding doctor is a specialist in that field. The legal name is the part to read, not the English brand.

Korean name on the signWhat it means
○○성형외과의원 or ○○성형외과Opened by a board-certified plastic surgeon (성형외과 전문의)
○○의원, with 진료과목: 성형외과 underneathA clinic that treats cosmetic cases, run by a doctor who may not be a plastic surgery specialist
○○피부과의원Opened by a board-certified dermatologist

The same rule covers dermatology. A sign that reads "○○의원" with 피부과 below it isn't a dermatologist's clinic either.

On the clinic's Korean website footer, its business registration line, or the street sign. English sites often show only a brand like "XYZ Plastic Surgery," which says nothing legally.

Korean news reports have documented clinics that print the 진료과목 line as large as the name itself, which the rules don't allow. If the two look the same size, read the name line, not the biggest word.

What doesn't the sign tell you?

It doesn't tell you who will operate on you. A specialist can open the clinic and employ other doctors, including non-specialists, and the name stays the same.

That's why the sign is the first filter, not the last one. The name of the operating surgeon, in writing, is what protects you. Our guide to verifying a Korean plastic surgeon covers the license check and how to avoid ghost surgery.

What's the difference between 의원 and 병원?

Size, mostly. A 의원 is a clinic, and under the Medical Service Act a 병원 (hospital) needs at least 30 inpatient beds. Most Gangnam plastic surgery practices are 의원, which is normal for this specialty.

For a health checkup, the answer flips. Those are done at large general hospitals, which is why a trip that combines surgery and a checkup usually means two very different buildings. See where Seoul's clinics and hospitals actually are.

How do we use this when we shortlist clinics?

We only introduce clinics where the operating surgeon is a 성형외과 전문의, and we give you that surgeon's name and license number before you book. The sign check is already done when you see our shortlist.

  • Two or three matched surgeons, not a directory.
  • The surgeon's name in writing, in Korean and English.
  • An interpreter in the consultation room, so the surgeon answers you directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can any doctor call their clinic 성형외과 in Korea?

No. Only a clinic opened by a board-certified plastic surgeon may use 성형외과 in its name. Other clinics must use ○○의원 and list plastic surgery as a field they treat.

Does 진료과목 성형외과 mean the doctor is a plastic surgeon?

No. It means the clinic treats plastic surgery cases. The doctor may be a general physician or a specialist in another field.

Does a specialist clinic name guarantee who operates?

No. The name reflects the doctor who opened the clinic. Get the operating surgeon's name and license number in writing before you pay a deposit.

Is a 병원 better than a 의원 for plastic surgery?

Not necessarily. 병원 means at least 30 inpatient beds, and most plastic surgery is done in 의원. The surgeon's training matters more than the building's size.
