What Facelift Aftercare Do You Need After You Fly Home From Korea?

You leave Seoul around day 14, but the facelift isn't done healing. What the next three months look like at home, what Korean clinics tell you to avoid until when, and what to send back to your Seoul surgeon.

Short answer: Most of the healing happens after you're home. Korean clinics tell facelift patients to avoid hard exercise, alcohol and smoking for about a month, and face massage, lasers and energy-based lifting for about three months. Swelling takes three to six months to settle, and numbness can last several months. Keep your Seoul surgeon in the loop with photos at set points.

At day 14 you look presentable and feel mostly normal. That's when you board the plane.

The surgeon who did the work is now an ocean away. So the job for the next few months is simple: don't undo anything, notice what's normal, and know what isn't.

What should you avoid for the first month at home?

Hard exercise, alcohol, smoking and heat. Gangnam Unni's facelift recovery guide, updated October 2026, puts drinking, smoking and strenuous exercise at about a month, and lists hot packs, saunas and bending your head down as things to avoid while healing.

Walking is usually encouraged. Get a written date for the gym before you leave Seoul.

When can you get lasers, facials or massage again?

Around three months, and only after checking with the surgeon. The same Gangnam Unni guide says Korean clinics usually start face massage, including 경락 (deep facial massage) and 괄사 (gua sha), and heat-based treatments like lasers and device lifting after about three months.

This catches people out at home. Tell your facialist or med spa you had a facelift, and when.

What's normal in months one to three?

A lot of things that feel wrong.

  • Firm, lumpy skin in front of the ears. Korean clinics call it 흉살, scar tissue, and say it softens over about three months.
  • Numbness around the ears and cheeks. Gangnam Unni's side-effect guide says it usually improves gradually over several months, and Seoul's Asan Medical Center says sensory changes typically resolve over months.
  • Tingling or sharp twinges as feeling returns. One Korean patient was told it was the nerves coming back.
  • Swelling that comes and goes. The face takes three to six months to look fully natural.
  • One side settling faster. Korean clinic guides say uneven early swelling usually evens out.

Our day-by-day recovery post covers the first two weeks, if you want to compare.

What isn't normal?

Call the Seoul clinic, and see a doctor at home the same day, if you notice:

  • One side suddenly swelling much more, or pain getting worse instead of better.
  • Fever, pus or discharge from an incision.
  • Skin near the incisions turning dark.
  • Weakness when you smile or close your eye that isn't improving.

Our guide on complications after flying home covers what to do in North America, and the revision post covers what happens later.

How do you take care of the scars?

Mostly by keeping sun off them. Gangnam Unni's side-effect guide warns that sun on healing incisions can darken them. Wear a hat and put sunscreen near the ears.

Some scars change late. The same guide notes a pulled earlobe can become noticeable six months to a year after surgery. It's uncommon. Revision of any kind usually waits until tissue settles; one Seoul surgeon suggests six months to a year.

What should you send back to your Seoul surgeon?

Photos, taken the same way each time. Front, both sides and both three-quarter views, in daylight, with hair pulled back. Good points are about one month, three months and six months.

Before you leave Seoul, ask:

  • Whether the clinic reviews follow-up photos, through which channel, and who reads them.
  • What the clinic covers if something needs fixing.
  • For a copy of your operative notes and medication list in English.
