How Do You Get Around Seoul After Surgery?
Taxis, not the subway, for the first week: which taxi apps work with a US phone and card (Uber, K.Ride, Kakao T), what Seoul's meter charges in 2026, the International Taxi from Incheon, and why the hotel should be close to the clinic.
Short answer: By taxi, for at least the first week. Uber works in Seoul with your US account and card, and Kakao Mobility's K.Ride app takes foreign cards too, while the main Kakao T app often rejects them. Seoul's daytime meter starts at ₩4,800 (about $3.40) for the first 1.6 km, so most hops between a Gangnam hotel and clinic cost a few dollars.
The subway is excellent and you'll want nothing to do with it on day 2. Transfers mean long corridors and stairs, and you may have a drain bag under your coat. Taxis are cheap enough that the decision makes itself.
Which taxi app works for a foreigner in Seoul?
Uber is the easiest start. You keep your US account and card, and the app translates messages between you and the driver. Under the hood, it books licensed Korean taxis.
K.Ride (케이라이드) is Kakao Mobility's app for foreigners, launched in June 2024. You sign up with a phone number plus a Google, Apple or email login, and register a card issued abroad. It's in English, Chinese and Japanese.
Kakao T, the app Koreans use, has the most cars. It's also the one most likely to reject a foreign card. Travel guides still report "invalid card" errors in 2026, and the usual workaround is choosing to pay the driver directly, by card or T-money, when you get out.

How much does a taxi cost in Seoul?
Not much by US standards. Seoul's regular taxis charge ₩4,800 for the first 1.6 km, then ₩100 for every 131 m, with time added in slow traffic. Those rates are from the city's fare page, unchanged since February 2023.
At night it climbs:
| Time | Base fare (first 1.6 km) |
|---|---|
| 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. | ₩4,800 (≈ $3.40) |
| 10–11 p.m. and 2–4 a.m. | ₩5,800 (≈ $4.15) |
| 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. | ₩6,700 (≈ $4.80) |
Black deluxe taxis (모범) and large vans start at ₩7,000 for 3 km.
How do you get from Incheon Airport to Gangnam?
The simplest option is the International Taxi (인터내셔널택시), a Seoul-designated service for foreigners with drivers who speak other languages. It charges zone fares between the airport and Seoul, with stands at 4C in Terminal 1 and 3C in Terminal 2.
Incheon Airport's own page warns about illegal call vans posing as taxis and overcharging. Use the marked taxi stands, a booked car, or a pickup you arranged. The jet lag and first days guide covers what to do once you land.
Can you walk around after surgery?
A little, and most surgeons want you to. Short walks near the hotel are normal from the first days. Long sightseeing days aren't.
Most plastic surgery clinics sit close together in Gangnam, mainly around Sinsa, Apgujeong, Cheongdam, Nonhyeon and Yeoksam. Our map of where Seoul's clinics are shows the clusters.
This is the real argument for a hotel close to the clinic. You'll go back for checks on day 1 or 2, again for the drain, and again for stitches. A five-minute taxi ride beats a 40-minute one every time.
When can you take the subway again?
There's no fixed day. A sensible marker is when the drains are out, most stitches are done, and stairs don't make you think. Ask your surgeon, especially after breast or body surgery, where a packed train is the real risk.
