How Do Korean Patients Choose a Facelift Surgeon?

What Koreans actually do before a facelift: shortlisting on Gangnam Unni and Babitalk, checking for a board-certified plastic surgeon, visiting several clinics in person, and reading community reviews for what the apps leave out.

Short answer: Most Koreans shortlist clinics on apps like Gangnam Unni (강남언니) and Babitalk (바비톡), keep only clinics run by a board-certified plastic surgeon, then visit several in person before booking. Community advice usually says at least three consultations, always with the surgeon rather than only the counselor, and no booking on the same day.

Korean patients face the same wall of ads you do. Their routine is fairly consistent, and most of it works from abroad.

Where do Korean patients start looking?

On two apps. Gangnam Unni says it has 9.5 million users and 4,900 listed hospitals. Babitalk advertises more than 10 million downloads.

A facelift listing on Gangnam Unni reads like a product page. One we checked in October 2026 showed ₩6.6 million (about $4,700) cut 25% to ₩4.95 million ($3,500), with VAT, anesthesia and aftercare marked as included, and points offered for a review.

Koreans call this stage 손품, "hand work": screening clinics from a phone before spending a day on visits.

Can you trust reviews on Gangnam Unni and Babitalk?

More than an Instagram post, less than a consultation. Both apps have real checks, and both have been gamed.

  • Gangnam Unni added receipt-verified reviews (영수증 인증) in January 2021. The receipt has to show the date, the clinic and the amount. The company says it blocked about 100,000 fake reviews from January 2022 to July 2024, and has penalized hospitals caught faking them since February 2023.
  • Babitalk says only users who requested a consultation through the app can write a review.

The limit showed up in July 2026. Korea's Fair Trade Commission sanctioned three Gangnam and Seocho clinics that had given patients surgery discounts for reviews on beauty apps and online cafes, undisclosed, from 2018 to May 2026. The patients were real. The reviews were still ads. More on that in are Korean clinic Instagram reviews real?

What is 발품, and how many clinics do Koreans visit?

발품 means "foot work": going to consultations in person. A popular guide on the community site Sungyesa says to visit at least five or six, and that ten isn't too many.

One woman who posted her facelift diary there compared two clinics before deciding. If you're flying in, two or three is realistic.

The same guide says not to book on the day, even for a same-day discount. Sleep on it for a day or two.

Who do Korean patients want to see in the consultation?

The surgeon. The strongest advice in that Sungyesa guide is to drop a clinic if you only meet the counselor (실장), if the counselor starts recommending procedures, or if a different doctor turns up than the one you booked.

The counselor handles price, dates and aftercare. Our guide to the counselor and the surgeon explains the split.

For a facelift, the follow-up question is whether the head surgeon (대표원장) operates personally. One commenter under a facelift review was trying to confirm exactly that.

How do they check the surgeon is a specialist?

By the clinic's legal name first: only a clinic opened by a board-certified plastic surgeon can be called ○○성형외과 (see reading a Korean clinic name). Then by confirming who actually operates, covered in how to verify a Korean plastic surgeon.

What do Korean facelift reviewers praise and complain about?

The praise is about the jawline. One patient who paid ₩5.5 million (about $3,900) for a full facelift said her jowls (불독살) and double chin were gone and she'd do it again, and wished she'd skipped years of thread lifts and laser lifting first.

The complaints are specific:

  • An incision that ran further than the patient expected.
  • Nasolabial folds starting to come back by day 18.
  • Uneven swelling and scarring when one side needed more lifting.
  • A scar behind the ear that still shows.

Readers asking for the clinic's name get answered in private comments. Sungyesa treats clinic recommendations in comments as likely viral marketing, and every post has a button to report a suspected broker.

How do we help with choosing?

We do the 발품 with you, in person.

  • Airport pickup, and consultations at two or three clinics booked across hospitals in one or two days.
  • An interpreter in the consultation room, so you're talking to the surgeon directly.
  • Only clinics where a 성형외과 전문의 operates, at no charge to you.

Frequently asked questions

Which apps do Koreans use to find a plastic surgeon?

Mainly Gangnam Unni (강남언니) and Babitalk (바비톡). Both list clinics, prices and patient reviews, and take consultation requests.

Are Gangnam Unni reviews verified?

Some are. Since January 2021, reviews with a checked payment receipt carry a 영수증 인증 tag. A receipt proves payment, not that the review wasn't traded for a discount.

How many consultations do Korean patients get before a facelift?

Community advice ranges from three to ten. For a trip from North America, plan on two or three.

Should the consultation be with the surgeon or the counselor?

Both, but the surgeon has to examine you and explain the plan. Korean patients drop clinics where only the counselor talks about the procedure.

Is a cheaper facelift on an app a red flag?

Not on its own; app listings routinely show discounts. Check what the price includes, such as VAT, anesthesia and aftercare, and confirm who operates.
