How Do Korean Clinics Treat Acne Scars, and Can You Do It in One Trip?
Korean dermatologists match the treatment to the scar shape: CO2 fractional for ice-pick, Potenza and subcision for boxcar and rolling, TCA CROSS for deep narrow pits. Sessions, spacing, downtime, 2026 prices, and what a single visit can achieve.
Short answer: Korean dermatologists choose by scar shape and usually combine methods: CO2 fractional laser for ice-pick scars, Potenza microneedle RF and subcision for boxcar and rolling scars, TCA CROSS for deep narrow pits. Expect a series, three to five Potenza sessions four to six weeks apart, or one to three CO2 sessions six to eight weeks apart. One trip gets you the first session and a plan. It doesn't get you the finished result.
Scars are the slowest thing people bring to a Seoul skin clinic. The pigment and the glow can change in a week. A rolling scar takes months, because the skin has to rebuild underneath it.
Knowing that, a trip is still worth it. Combined scar treatment is routine at Korean clinics.
What type of acne scars do you have?
The type decides the treatment. A Seoul clinic group's scar guide (on its site in 2026) uses the standard four shapes:
| Scar | What it looks like | Where it's common |
|---|---|---|
| Ice-pick | Narrow, deep, pointed | Nose, forehead |
| Boxcar | Flat-bottomed with sharp edges | Cheeks, temples |
| Rolling | Wide, shallow, wavy | Cheeks |
| Hypertrophic | Raised, not sunken | Chin, back, chest |
Most faces have a mix, so the consultation matters more than any one device.
Which treatments do Korean clinics use for which scars?
The same guide pairs them like this:
- CO2 fractional laser for ice-pick scars and boxcar edges. One to three sessions, six to eight weeks apart, five to ten days of downtime.
- Potenza (a microneedle RF device made by the Korean company Jeisys) for boxcar and rolling scars. Three to five sessions, four to six weeks apart, two to four days of downtime.
- Excel V, a vascular laser, for the redness around scars rather than the dip itself.
Subcision (서브시전, also called 새살침, "new-flesh needle") cuts the fibrous bands that tether rolling scars down. A clinic listing on Gangnam Unni describes 90 minutes including numbing and three days of downtime, and says it isn't for keloid-prone skin or active acne.
What is TCA CROSS, and why do Korean clinics use it?
It's a pinpoint acid treatment for deep, narrow scars. A strong trichloroacetic acid is pressed into each pit to trigger new collagen. Korean dermatologists described the method in Dermatologic Surgery in 2002, reporting a good response in 82% to 94% of 65 patients depending on the acid strength. Korean articles describe it as repeated about every four weeks.
How much does acne scar treatment cost in Korea?
Per session, before VAT, from that 2026 clinic guide:
- Potenza: about ₩300,000 to ₩600,000 ($215 to $430)
- CO2 fractional: about ₩200,000 to ₩500,000 ($145 to $355)
- Excel V: about ₩200,000 to ₩400,000 ($145 to $285)
Combined sessions are priced as packages. A subcision listing we saw at a clinic outside Seoul was ₩165,000 ($118) for 15 needle points, VAT included, numbing extra.
That listing was at a 한의원, a Korean medicine clinic, not a dermatology clinic. Both appear side by side on apps. If you want a dermatologist, check the clinic name; our post on Korean clinic names explains how.
What can one trip actually do?
One combined session, for most people. A typical plan we see is subcision plus a laser or Potenza on the same day, with a few days in Seoul to heal before flying.
CO2 fractional needs the most room, five to ten days, so it goes at the start of a trip. Our downtime guide has the full table. After that, you either return in six to eight weeks or take the settings home to a dermatologist there.
