How Is a Facelift Different for Men in Korea?

A male facelift uses the same operation, planned around a beard, sideburns, shorter hair and a higher bleeding risk. What Korean surgeons and published data say, and what men should ask in a Seoul consultation.

Short answer: It's the same operation, 3 to 6 hours under general anesthesia or sedation, but the plan changes in three places: the incision has to work with short hair and a beard, the sideburn mustn't get pulled up, and men bleed more afterward. One long-running US series put the male hematoma rate at 3.97% against under 1 to 2% for women.

In December 2025 the comedian Shim Hyung-rae, then 67, posted a video of his own facelift revision on his YouTube channel, bandages and all, and it ran as a news story rather than a scandal.

The questions men bring are different, though. Mostly about hair.

Is a male facelift a different operation?

No. The incision runs along the hairline and sideburn, in front of and behind the ear, and the surgeon lifts the deeper layer (SMAS) and its ligaments rather than only the skin. A December 2025 Kormedi article on Shim's surgery gives 3 to 6 hours.

What differs is where the lines can hide. Women can cover a scar with longer hair. Many men can't, so the line in front of the ear and the one behind it carry more weight. Our post on where facelift incisions go shows the full path.

What happens to the beard and sideburns?

They move with the skin. When cheek skin is pulled up and back, the beard-bearing skin goes with it, which is why surgeons plan carefully where the beard edge ends up near the ear.

The sideburn is the bigger worry. A Korean hair-transplant surgeon wrote in Financial News in September 2026 that hair transplant clinics now see a steady stream of people whose sideburns or hairline changed after a facelift. Skin pulled upward can lift the sideburn or shorten its front edge, and the face can look wider. His fix is a sideburn transplant, angled so the hair lies flat.

Ask before surgery, not after:

  • Where will my sideburn be after the lift?
  • Will beard hair end up close to or behind the ear, and will I need to shave there?
  • If I have thinning hair at the temples, how does that change the incision?

Do men have a higher risk of bleeding after a facelift?

Yes, by most published accounts. A US surgical series presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons meeting in 2004 found hematoma needing surgery in men dropped from 8.7% to 3.97% after strict blood-pressure control, still higher than under 1 to 2% in women. The usual explanations are a richer blood supply in beard skin and higher blood pressure.

So expect a Korean surgeon to care a lot about your blood pressure the week of surgery. If you take blood pressure pills, bring them and the names in English. Read what raises the risk of a facelift hematoma before you go.

Is recovery different for men?

Mostly the same timeline. Gangnam Unni's facelift guide gives two to three weeks to ordinary daily life and three to six months for the face to settle, without splitting by sex.

Two things men tend to notice: shaving around the incisions, and short hair that hides nothing in the first two weeks. Ask the clinic when you can shave near the ear. A cap for the flight home helps. Our recovery day by day post walks through those two weeks.

It's the same operation, planned differently around short hair, the beard and the sideburns.

Can a facelift move a man's sideburns?

Yes. Pulling the skin up can raise or shorten the sideburn. A Korean hair-transplant surgeon wrote in 2026 that some patients later have sideburn hair transplanted.

Do men bleed more after a facelift?

Published series say yes. One US series reported a 3.97% hematoma rate in men after strict blood-pressure control, against under 1 to 2% in women.

How long does a male facelift take in Korea?

About 3 to 6 hours, under general anesthesia or sedation, according to a 2025 Kormedi article.
